Implementation of CMMI

Capability and Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) is a structured measurement method for measuring the maturity of organizational processes. Developed by the U.S. Government and Carnegie Mellon University, the initial focus was on measuring the maturity of software and has expanded to include that of an organization’s business processes. When combined with the concept of Integrated Performance Leadership (IPL), CMMI provides an excellent measurement framework for the organization to understand their journey and status to integration.

The requirement for deploying CMMI in organizations is showing up in more government contracts and driving the structuring of Integrated Product/Program Teams. The Government's interest in CMMI is one of risk reduction. The higher a contractor's CMMI ratings, the higher the probability that the contractor has robust business process to assure the deliver of the contracted products or services.

The challenge for organizations is to implement CMMI without it becoming an added burden, but rather an integrated tool of value.
